ABSTRACT

Powerlink Queensland manages a vast network of approximately 15,000 circuit kilometres (km) of transmission lines extending from the New South Wales border to tropical North Queensland.

Traditionally, vegetation management has focused on herbicide and mechanical treatments to control incompatible regrowth species. However, economic pressures and a focus on environmental sustainability have seen Powerlink innovate cost-effective methods for vegetation management.

In 2019, Powerlink launched a pilot project introducing Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) principles along a 3km section of easement within a National Park in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. This area, challenged by the pioneer species Callicoma serratifolia, required meticulous planning to ensure compliance and feasibility.

This presentation outlines the IVM project, highlighting stakeholder collaboration, mechanical and herbicide treatments, strategic fire use, and promotion of native vegetation. The presentation highlights the research opportunities with local universities, consultants, and Natural Resource Management groups conducting field studies and species surveys. It will also outline the establishment of permanent monitoring plots in providing baseline data and insights into the impacts of vegetation management on biodiversity and sustainability.

Powerlink's IVM initiative demonstrates a commitment to cost efficiency, fire risk reduction, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. By adopting IVM practices, Powerlink is enhancing infrastructure and local community resilience and preserving Queensland's natural heritage.
