ABSTRACT

Using a recent helicopter removal will be used for this presentation. Discussions will include justification, relevant Parts for CASA, preparations, management of safety, training, human factors and issues arising during works.

The use of helicopters for logging and some tree removal work is not new concept and commonly undertaken in a number of countries. Across Australia there is considerable long line (lift work) undertaken. One track construction I assisted with performed 2,500 lifts. Using helicopters for tree work presents additional variables especially when cutting aloft.

Meeting the requirements for CASA and the cost of using these machines quickly extinguish boyish whims and cowboy operators. In addition our OH&S Act 2004 amongst other items clearly states the requirement for Information, Instruction, Training and Supervision.

The use of helicopters requires its cost to be justified, the clear CASA rules (Parts) for their use followed and employers to comply to the requirements under the Act. The use of rotary wing aircraft does have application in our industry however infrequently used at this time. This presentation strives to discuss some applications for helicopters and the responsibilities of the chain of employment with regard safety, operational competence and review processes.
